some food for thought

"I don’t please all the men of Megara;
So what: not even Zeus is praised by all,
Whether he holds his rain or lets it fall."

"When the city is upset, Kurnos, keep calm.
And stay, as I do, on the middle road."

"Beside the punch-bowl, many are loyal friends,
But in important matters, they are few."

"Acted, I haven’t acted; finishing,
I’ve finished nothing. Nothing is complete
Though I’ve completed much; accomplishing,
I’ve not accomplished anything at all."

these are a few quotes from the elegies of the 6th century BC author, Theognis. he was a very troubled, paranoid, and sarcastic man, who was wise beyond his years. he also had a penchant for younger boys. i find the truth in these to be everlasting, and witty enough to keep with me as a stock phrase for general use. unfortunately, not much is really known about theognis. he was from megara, which was later an important ally to athens. that is all.
